I had just started to volunteer at GiGi’s Playhouse and was overwhelmed by all of the new people I was meeting. Craig told me that he was glad I was there, and greeted me with a warm hug. As he shared more about his life story, I was amazed. From that day on, Craig has been a close friend.

Although it's just been 3 months, Craig has made a monumental impact on my life. Running the race together and watching him cross the finish line with his hands in the air will live with me forever. His grit and determination to reach his goal is exactly what he preaches. “Success comes in trying”. He is a true source of inspiration not only for other individuals with Down syndrome like my nephew, Luke, but for everyone.

Since I was working in Children’s Medical Services in Tallahassee, the staff helped me find every recent brochure, pamphlet, or guide covering Down syndrome and I mailed this package to his parents. There were so many medical obstacles in the beginning, but Craig was blessed with a loving family and doctors who never quit.

My relationship with Craig can be summarized in two words “My Hero”. When I married his mom, Pat, I thought I knew what I was in for and I was ready to love Craig as a son and a friend. My relationship with him has far exceeded anything I had imagined.

Our lives took a path forty-three years ago that I could not have even imagined, but the path has been amazing. I have grown and learned so much from Craig. He has brought such joy and fulfillment to my life and I know what my purpose in life is because of Craig. I will never be able to give to him what he has given to me.
