The Silas Series 2/5: Stephanie/Mom
(THE SILAS SERIES 2/5: Stephanie/Mom)
Nine years ago when I stepped into my role as a dance mom I never thought it would be the very thing to bring me comfort and peace amidst the chaos and fear of being separated from my baby as he was sent to the NICU shortly after being born…
The nurse's voice rose above the beeping machines, “Hey, do your girls dance at Dance Dimensions dance studio?” Her question, while surprising in a hospital setting, somehow grounded me, a familiar topic in an unfamiliar situation. Knowing there would be a fellow dance mom in the NICU with my son, loving him a little extra, hit me like a wave of relief. I silently nodded my head as the nurse let me know my new baby was already being looked after by a fellow dance mom.
Silas got strong and after 20 days in the NICU came home. As the weeks and months passed by, we learned our dance community consists of even more connections; a cardiac PICU nurse, a child life specialist, a physical therapy assistant, and a village of supporters coming together to do whatever it takes to support Silas and our family in his journey. Upon learning about a Down syndrome diagnosis I had moments wondering if life as we knew it would change when in fact, Silas has only added to what already is, showing up as a type of glue bringing our family and whole dance community closer. He’s opened a whole new world for our family, for our dance family too! I can’t wait to see what his future holds.
