The Sabine Series 6/7: Rashid/Friend
(THE SABINE SERIES 6/7: Rashid/Friend)
Sabine and I have a special handshake. We have a special handshake because she is the best person in the world to play games with. She always has a game cued up. Sometimes she’ll school me with a deck of cards, or a new game on her phone, or heaven forbid, a dancing game on the console. When our families camp together Sabine always sets up a game while the rest of us set up our tents. I believe bocce ball was the latest camping game. Sabine can turn anything into a game. The handshake developed when we made a game of sneaking tater tots off of each other’s dinner plates. I was deep in conversation with someone else at the table and just barely registered a tater tot disappear from my plate to hers. She got me! She stole a tot! And boy was she happy about it! And when she laughs, you can’t help but laugh, too. It’s practically a rule of the game. So now it’s my turn to try and sneak a tot from her plate. And I’m failing because Sabine is eagle eyed and full on focused on tot protection. Finally, her attention shifted to something else across the room and I slowly reached towards her plate. I thought I was being smooth but she turned and looked right at me, serious yet silent, gesturing with her hands, “I see you!”, with two fingers pointing from her eyes to my eyes. We all lost it! My ribs ached from laughing so hard. And I’m pretty sure she snuck another tater tot while we were all laughing. Well, that hand gesture stuck. It became how we greeted each other. And over time we’ve added fist bumps and high fives but it always ends with a flurry of, “I see you!”. She’s my favorite person to greet. It’s a standing invitation to keep playing, and keep laughing. Game on, Sabine!
