The Colin Series 3/5: Brian, Dad

(THE COLIN SERIES 3/5: Brian, Dad)

One afternoon as I was returning home from work, I found my mother nervously standing on the front steps looking around. Before I even put my car in park I asked what was wrong? She stated she could not find Colin. I calmly asked where Liam and John (brothers) were? My mother replied, Charlie’s house, which is just around the block. I found my way over to his brother’s friend's house and sure enough there he was standing in the driveway with his two older brothers and their friend. I calmly, but firmly, asked Colin what he was doing and why he left the house without telling Mimi? He replied just as firmly, “Dad I am 7 years old and I want to play with my brothers and Charlie. I am not a baby!” My heart sank as I thought we had a bit longer before Colin realized he was treated somewhat differently and “sheltered” more than others around him.

From that moment on, Colin has continuously shown a desire for more independence. I can name countless examples, especially with the things we are always reminding his older brothers to do, Colin is doing without being told. A bright future is waiting for him and I am quite sure he will conquer any challenges he may face.
