The Carly Series 3/4: Matt, Dad

(THE CARLY SERIES 3/4: Matt, Dad)

Boogers and tears were smeared across my face but I’ve never been so grateful. Carly was fighting a bad cold one night and it seemed like nothing was helping to ease her pain. I felt horrible as I held her, knowing there wasn’t anything else that could be done. With her head on my shoulder, I just kept repeating, “I love you CarCar. I love you.”

I wanted to take whatever it was that was making her so upset and caused so much discomfort and switch places with her. I could feel myself starting to get choked up. It was like she understood exactly what I was saying and exactly what I needed at that very moment. She picked her head up. Stopped crying and looked straight into my eyes. I can’t explain it, but I swear there was a moment of complete understanding between us. As if she said without saying I know, I love you too!

I just felt it. She then leaned forward and planted the biggest, snottiest, wettest smooch right on my lips. She put her head back down on my shoulder and went to sleep. That moment of love, connection, and unspoken communication is something I’ll never forget. That is a moment I will always cherish.
