(THE FREDDIE SERIES 3/5: Fred, Dad)

I remember the day he was born. The fear of the unknown, would he be ok, as I watched him lying in the PICU. He had tubes in his nose that I could tell were helping him breathe. I knew then, 100 percent, that he had Down syndrome. I could see it in his eyes even though they were shut as he lay there struggling to navigate this new world he'd just been born into. In a few minutes his apgar score would be at an 8, and his grit and determination has shone on from those first few moments of life. Freddie has gotten older and fought through many diagnoses, mostly with a smile on his face. I don't know if I've met a tougher human being in my life.
