"I was alone in an elevator when I got Neo’s diagnosis from my crying wife, Vanessa. We had asked the genetic counselor to wait until we were together for the news, but she just called and told her emotionlessly. Thankfully my wife was with a friend in the Huntington Library gardens who consoled her. I had the elevator trip up to add my support, cry to myself at the counselor’s lack of tact, and get to my appointment. I was fine with the diagnosis, just mad that the counselor didn’t have a more informed outlook on what living with DS could be. I’ve never regretted Neo’s diagnosis. He’s brought focus, challenge and joy to my life. I wonder who he is becoming and take humble pride in being a part of enabling this little guy to be the best version of himself."
