(The Miles Series 3/4: Zach/Dad)

"As Miles and I got in the car to drive down to San Diego, I put some music on and suddenly I was weeping uncontrollably. The last few weeks had been a whirlwind and I hadn’t really considered any of my feelings regarding Miles graduating elementary school. All at once I was overcome with a flood of emotion and an intense sense of pride. Sure Miles was behind in school, but he had completed something that 6 years ago seemed like an eternity away.

‘Miles, I’m so proud of you,’ I said sniffing.

‘Aww, thanks dad.’ He looked at me thoughtfully and added ‘Don’t cry daddy, it’s okay.’

He was right, things were okay. We were on our way to visit his friend from school to celebrate graduation. Friends from school were few and far between and I was happy that another kid wanted to hang with him. I just wanted his graduation to be memorable and special. So we jammed down to San Diego in search of an adventure. The day was filled with fun; paddleboarding, swimming and riding on the boat. Specifically, at the pool, his friend set the tone and all the kids included him in the games. Honestly, I couldn’t remember the last time I’d seen him so happy, relaxed and just having a good time. As I watched him splashing in the pool and generally yukking it up, I saw the man he was becoming and beamed with pride."
