THE MACCLAREN SERIES 2/4: Michelle, Mom

Ever since Macclaren was born Bruce and I always treated her the same as her three older sisters. It didn’t take me long to realize that her having Down syndrome shouldn’t make a difference in how she was being raised. Macclaren takes longer to do things, but that’s fine. Having expectations for your children is something that every parent needs to have. It doesn’t matter if your child has a disability; you still need to have expectations for them. Things can take a longer period of time to accomplish and there might have to be some modifications, but that’s ok. Bruce and I tried and tried to teach Macclaren how to ride a two wheeler bike without training wheels. We never gave up on her. When Macclaren was 15 years old I signed her up for the iCan Bike one week summer camp program. Within a couple of days Macclaren was riding a bicycle like a pro! The best thing was hearing Macclaren say, “I did it, I did it!” Throwing a kiss, blowing bubbles, riding a bike, going to college, being an ESU Warrior cheerleader, and working in food preparation at Chef Loryn’s are just some of the things that Macclaren is doing while she is living the good life.
