The Logan Series 3/4: Scott, Dad
(THE LOGAN SERIES 3/4: Scott, Dad)
Women have nine months to build a connection with their children, but for some men like myself, it does not happen right away. I found that connection when Logan was about three months old. He let out his first laugh with me, and things immediately changed. I have since come to realize that moment was also a defining part of who Logan is.
At a year old, Logan developed a unique laugh that I can only describe as an old man's laugh. It was mature and rolled in a way that was too advanced for a one-year-old. It was so distinct, and everyone who heard it couldn't help but to join in. He got the nickname of Mr. Mayor, he has to say hi to everyone and make them smile.
In December of 2018, my wife called me while I was working. What we thought was a cold and routine sick visit to the doctors was much more severe. Logan's oxygen was very low, and the doctor called an ambulance. I jumped into my car in NYC and raced back to NJ to beat the ambulance to the hospital. When the doors of the ambulance opened, I was expecting to see a child in critical condition. I saw him strapped in his car seat tied to a gurney...both hands in the air vigorously waiving and screaming hi at everyone with a huge smile ear to ear. Things took a turn for the worst after that, and we almost lost him, but God shed his grace on him. Regardless of how severe things got, Logan's cheerful personality showed through in the worst of times.
Logan is so much more than just a son to me. In some ways, he's become my greatest teacher making me more patient, loving, caring, humbler, and happier than I was before having him in it. My life will forever be changed because of him, and I wouldn't change it for anything.
