THE ASHER SERIES 2/5: Brittney, Mom
We are sitting in church on a typical Sunday. We had recently gotten brave enough to move from the narthex to inside the church. Three boys under 7 makes for self induced stress during mass. Will they be quiet? Will they be disruptive? Will they make fart noises? Pretty standard thoughts for any parent, right?
We usually sit towards the front to help keep the boys attention on Father Mark and everything that is happening around the altar. Father Mark is wrapping up his homily and Chris and I are feeling pretty good about the boys’ behavior. It’s not uncommon for Asher to belt out an “Amen!” or “Hi Father Mark!” or Levi and Mason to pick at each other, so when we had made it to the end of the homily with relative quietness from all three boys we thought we were home free.
Father Mark makes his last remark and right before we stand for the profession of faith Asher belts out “Don’t underestimate the power of the dark side!”. (We are Star Wars fans). Smiles immediately spread across Chris and I’s faces. Levi and Mason are pumped to hear a Star Wars quote.
Some giggles erupt because if you know Asher (the kid has never met a stranger) you know that he has a lot of great one liners for a 6 year old. Father Mark doesn’t miss a beat and quickly responds with “Amen Asher!”. Sage advice from that little man. I would follow up with ‘Love thy neighbor as thyself’.
