The Alex Series 2/8: Cindy/Mom

(THE ALEX SERIES 2/8: Cindy/Mom)

People often expect that people with Down Syndrome lack problem solving skills. That isn’t the case. Alex’s creativity and tenacity have always been integral parts of his personality. Once, when he was about eight years old, playing soccer with a bunch of kids (most of them older than he was) the soccer ball was accidentally kicked into a narrow culvert running under the driveway. After a few failed attempts to retrieve the ball the children went on to another activity. Alex, however, was determined to get it out. He tried reaching it with the handle of a hoe and a rake but the ball just rolled further away. Then he tried to use the lawn tools to make giant tweezers to trap the ball. That wasn’t successful either. So, for about ten minutes, he sat at the side of the culvert staring at the problem, thinking of ways to solve his dilemma. Then he trotted over to the water hose, pulled it over to the driveway, turned it on and ran water to float the ball out. Success! I remember being so impressed with his creativity and determination to find a solution.
