A Word From Our Founder

I know there is a lot of information and helpful tools about health and education being offered to parents, family members and educators connected to a person with Down syndrome. While this information is foundational for a new parent and transformational for all, I also know so much of what we crave when entering into the unknown is to see ourselves in it.

From moms reaching out to other moms through instagram, to the new grandma on a search for other grandmas with grandchildren who have Down syndrome, to the educators who admit they don’t know what it looks like to work with a student with Down syndrome, to the parents of neuro-typical kids wondering how they can best navigate a relationship with their peer who has Down syndrome, these stories are for them.

And for you and for me. These stories are a tool available to help us feel seen and known. An archive of “me too!” and “I see you!” And a gift to help us enhance our humanity.

- Heather Avis

Three Donor Opportunities for 2022

Over the course of the next 12 months The Lucky Few Foundation is looking to raise $175K dollars for operations, storytelling outreach and the This Is Down Syndrome video series. Each dollar will help us shout the worth of people with Down syndrome and shift the Down syndrome narrative fueling a global movement where everyone belongs. Here is how the finances break down.

Storytelling Events

Gathering diverse stories and connecting with a variety of people are at the heart of this movement. Knowing this, the Foundation will be traveling around the nation with the Avis family, making those connections and telling those stories with a national, 6-week story-gathering tour planned for Summer 2022. This money would cover all the cost of travel (flights, accommodations, and food) for our family of five plus one Production Assistant.

Media Production for This is Down Syndrome Project

We have a goal to produce 10 videos in 2022. We launched on March 21st, 2021 with a goal to capture the stories of 121 people. To date, we have captured stories from more than 100 beautiful humans who either have Down syndrome or love someone who does. We have a goal to produce 10 documentary videos each roughly 3 minutes in length. From start to finish, each video will take 2 months, including pre-production through filming to post-production.

Operations

In order to for us to reach our goal to capture 10 videos in 2022, we will need to add some key personnel of like-minded professionals to the team. This money would allow us to hire a full-time Production Assistant. This new role would run day-to-day operations for This Is Down Syndrome pre and post-production, as well as assist with all details of travel.
